If you are doing local marketing.  A smart thing to do is set your target country for search results in google.  Even if you have a website that has content for multiple countries you are able to set a target country for that folder on your website.

If you are have a plumbing services website that lists plumbing services world wide set a target country for the content that is for each country.

For example, if your site is abcplumbing.com and each country has a subfolder, then use google webmaster tools to set the target country like this:

Target country                                         Setting

Australia                                                      http://abcplumbing.com/au

Canada                                     ...

I have a few websites that I run wordpress multisite.  I like to be able to see stats for the entire network and each individual blog on the network.  In order to do this very easily I use a google analytics multisite plugin from wpmudev.

In the network admin, ad your google analytics code and then you can see stats for the entire network, even for blogs you don’t directly manage.

James Farmer (creator of WPMU Dev, my favourite WP plug in source) provides some great insight into the inner workings of SEO from a website promoters point of view.

Apparently there has been a lot of sites that have seen there rank in SERP’s drop as a result of the Penguin update.   I can’t relate to this as I have only seen my sites improve in rankings every day, that must be a result of good quality content and doing things properly.

Anyhow, knowing how SEO works is definitely one of the most important things for any business that wants to promote their site online.  Many businesses laque the basic knowledge of SEO as I see it everyday when visiting competitors sites.
